Die Schülerinnen und Schüler der Englischklasse 7b von Lehrerin Maren König konnten es kaum glauben, als sie aufgefordert wurden, schwer einprägsame Worte mit dem Boardmarker an die Fenster zu schreiben oder kreative Phantasiegeschichten auf Stühlen stehend und mit Requisiten ausgestattet zu erfinden. Und für die Textproduktion nutzten die Schülerinnen und Schüler einen neuen, digitalen Helfer.

Die Ergebnisse einer eigens durchgeführten Mini-Studie überzeugten jedoch und ließen keinen Zweifel, dass Vokabellernen am besten funktioniert, wenn das neue Wort dem Gehirn auf möglichst vielfältige Weise präsentiert wird. Die Erkenntnisse aus der Unterrichtseinheit zum Vokabellernen wurden direkt zum Anlass genommen und mit einer digital gestützten Textproduktion kombiniert. Die nächste Herausforderung wartete auf die Schülerinnen und Schüler, die nämlich mit ihrem Artikel über das Vokabellernen gegen ChatGPT antreten sollten. Es hieß also: iPads raus, Buch raus und erst einmal recherchieren, wie sich ein guter Artikel aufbaut. In Gruppenarbeit wurde überprüft, ob ChatGPT diese Kriterien berücksichtigt und auch inhaltlich sauber arbeitet. ChatGPT schien auf den ersten Blick eindrucksvoll zu sein, bei genauerem Hinsehen fielen den Schülerinnen und Schülern jedoch direkt einige Verbesserungsvorschläge ein. Und die Resultate können sich wirklich sehen lassen. Johanna Blißenbach berichtet:

It was time for a touch-up on strategies for learning vocabulary in grade seven. The following vocabulary strategies are brilliant, as you can learn vocabulary by heart easily and use them smartly. The strategies include window words, interactive storytelling, and a brand-new flashcard design. With these strategies, learning vocabulary will be both way more fun and more effective. Give it a go!

The first strategy may sound strange at first, but it is very helpful. Write difficult words that you want to learn on the window. This way, you see the words all the time and learn them by heart faster. If you organize them or use different colors and add symbols, you will learn them faster because colors and symbols help your brain memorize. Don’t use an Edding; go for a board marker instead.

Although the second learning strategy may be a little time-consuming, it helps your brain memorize the words more quickly. Invent a story in which the vocabulary you need to learn appears and tell the story out loud. In doing so, your brain establishes a connection between the known and unknown words. Additionally, you also learn how to use words correctly in context. If you want to learn even faster, include items and use your body to express the new words in the story. The more connections your brain makes, the easier it is to remember the new word.

The last strategy is probably also the strategy mostly known by students. It requires flashcards. BUT, you don’t just write the new word on one side and the translation on the other. Challenge yourself and use one side ONLY! Include the new word in context, use a different color to highlight the new vocabulary, and explain it. Also, include the positive effect of visualization and include symbols or little drawings too. For instance: "Strategies are special ways of doing something; e.g., designing flashcards and using colors, symbols, and examples is a strategy for learning vocabulary." You can still quiz yourself and use those flashcards with family or friends. This option is also extremely great as you can learn the vocabulary in different places (on the bus, in a cafe, etc.).

All in all, there are many different vocabulary learning strategies out there. There most certainly is one that works for you. Let's find out which one that is, and let’s learn vocabulary!
